Restoration work continues at Thiepval
The first major stage in the current phase of the restoration works on Thiepval Memorial has been completed on the upper and southern face of the memorial.
The current focus is on the installation of new Portland stone panels recently engraved in our Beaurains workshop and the re-engraving of the existing memorial panels. Work on the north side of the memorial and repointing work will also start in the spring as the weather improves.
This project is part of the second phase of restoration, following the completion of the initial phase in February 2016.
Work began on the current phase in March 2021, and despite complications due to coronavirus restrictions, the works are on course to be completed during Summer 2022.
While the public access to the memorial is currently not possible, visitors can still explore the battlefields of the Somme and discover the story of the largest CWGC memorial through our onsite digital exhibition.
In The Shadow of Thiepval can be explored for free by visitors to the memorial. It is accessible via mobile phone or tablet and tells the story of the Battle of the Somme, the design and construction of the memorial and the stories of the 72,000 casualties commemorated on its walls.
