RESTORATION TIMELINE
17 April 2023 WORKS STARTED for a duration of over 2 years (until approx. Summer 2025).
The Memorial was covered in scaffolding for the entire first year of works. The scaffolding in the main hall will be removed between 8 April to 8 May, allowing the name panels there to be visible again and the Last Post Ceremony to return to its original location under the Memorial. During the removal process, the road into the city will be closed for all motorized traffic.
Please note that scaffolding for the galleries and facades will remain in place until end of works, meaning that name panels on the north and south sides are not accessible for visitors.
Two PEDESTRIAN TUNNELS give visitor access to and from the city. The pedestrian tunnels will be almost completely removed by 12 May 2024.
By 13 May 2024, two-way bicycle traffic and one way vehicle traffic into the city will be possible again until the end of the restoration.

Frequently asked questions about the Menin Gate restoration
The Commonwealth War Graves Commission has recently undertaken in-depth inspections of the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial. This has led to the conclusion that major restoration of the Memorial is necessary to guarantee its long-term preservation. The structure and stability of the Memorial are in good condition, however erosion and superficial damage have been found which need attention to avoid further deterioration.
The restoration includes the conservation - cleaning and repairing - of the natural stone elements and the repointing of the brick façades. The name panels will also be cleaned and repaired where necessary, and a new waterproof seal will be applied to the roof. Various repairs will also be carried out to the cellars, stair towers, ceilings, and the bronze oculi (round openings in the roof). Innovation, sustainability, and safe accessibility are the guiding principles throughout this restoration. The recovery of authentic materials will be paramount throughout the works, in line with the conservation policy of the Commonwealth War Graves Commission.
On site works started on 17 April 2023 and are planned to be finished in Summer 2025.
We strive to guarantee the passage under the Menin Gate during the entire duration of the works where possible: for pedestrians in 2 directions; for traffic (bicycles and vehicles) 1 direction (towards city center).
To ensure the safety of the public and the workers, it will sometimes be required to close off the passage for traffic. During the duration of the restoration (approx. 2 years), we estimate the access to be closed off for around 12 weeks (spread over 4 periods). Pedestrians will always be able to pass under the bridge (after working hours) via two pedestrians' tunnels.

The Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial will not be fully accessible to the public for the entire duration of the works. To ensure the safety of the workers and visitors, scaffolding and hoarding is required. Multiple alternative and innovative ways to discover the Memorial are provided.
Bressers Erfgoed, a leading architectural agency with years of expertise and experience with heritage structures, has been appointed as the architect for the project.
The works will be carried out by Monument Vandekerckhove who was appointed by the CWGC based on a public tender.
Health and Safety Coordinator during the works is IVW-Consult.
Yes, works will have finished by the centenary of the Memorial.
The area around the Menin Gate site will be partly used for the site installation/set-up. However, both Parking at Hoornwerk and Kauwekijnstraat (coach parkings) will still be available.
The recurring events are taken into account in the project program. The city of Ypres and other organizing parties are closely involved in the project.
Depending on the nature of the event and the ongoing works, the event will take place at the Menin Gate site or an alternative location will be searched.

During the entire duration of the works, the name panels will be hidden behind the site hoarding and/or scaffolding. As a result, visitors will not be able to physically view the names on the monument.
The Last Post Service will continue to take place during the restoration works on the Menin Gate site on the bridge in front of the Menin Gate.

We expect a total restoration budget of over 3 million Euro to carry out the required works.
The Commonwealth War Graves Commission received a premium of 1,6 million Euros after applying in the thematic call 'Heritage and Tourism' launched by Flemish Minister of Immovable Heritage Matthias Diependaele in 2021.
The City of Ypres has also subsidised for 300,000 Euro. The resting cost will be paid for by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission, who is funded by its member governments of the Commonwealth nations who share the cost of the Commission's work proportionately to the number of their graves.
All efforts have been undertaken to minimise disruption during the construction period for the restoration project at the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial between April 2023 to Summer 2025.
Pedestrian tunnels are erected to allow passage to and from Ypres city centre. Exceptional closing of the gate for traffic (vehicles, bicycles, pedestrian tunnels) will be notified on top of this page.
Access to the Menin Gate Moments Exhibition is possible by either of the following two routes:
Route One (photo left):
Access to the Menin Gate Moments exhibition is possible via scaffolding stairs that lead up to a tarmac path. The path goes uphill to the right of the Memorial.
Route Two (photo right):
This route is accessible for wheelchair users.
Follow Bollingstraat for more than 200 meters in southerly direction past the Sint-Jacobs Church. On the left, it is possible to reach the Ramparts via a sloped tarmac pathway, The path is smooth with a shallow gradient. On the ramparts, turn left and follow the pathway to the Menin Gate Moments Exhibition. The total distance of this route is approximately 570 meters.
Yes, an asbestos-containing layer on the ceilings of the vault and the galleries is being removed during the restoration of the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial. Our contractor Group Monument works together with a government-approved asbestos removal company Asbest Care to safely remove the asbestos. Any questions or concerns about the asbestos removal, please reach out via enquiries@cwgc.org.
The strictest remediation method is applied during the removal of the asbestos-containing layer on the ceilings of the monument. The affected zones will be completely hermetically sealed. In addition, daily checks are carried out by an independent external laboratory. These works are checked by the Flemish Authority Department 'Supervision Welfare at Work'. Restauratie Menenpoort
De Commonwealth War Graves Commission start de restauratie van de iconische Menenpoort in Ieper vanaf 17 april 2023. Het monument wordt terug in ere hersteld voor haar 100-jarige bestaan in 2027.
PRAKTISCHE INFO
WERKEN STARTTEN op 17 april 2023 voor een periode van meer dan 2 jaar (tot ongeveer de zomer van 2025)
Het monument was bedekt in stellingen voor het volledige eerste jaar van de werken. Van 8 april tot 8 mei 2024 worden de stellingen in de hoofdhal van het monument afgebroken, zodat de naampanelen daar terug te bezichtigen zijn, en de Last Post Ceremonie terug kan plaatsvinden op zijn originele locatie onder de Menenpoort.
Tijdens de afbraak van de stellingen zal de weg naar de stad afgesloten worden voor gemotoriseerd verkeer.
We informeren jullie dat de stellingen aan de galerijen en de voor- en achtergevel van het monument blijven staan tot einde van de werken. Dit betekent dat de naampanelen aan de noord- en zuidkant van het monument niet toegankelijk zijn voor bezoekers.
Twee VOETGANGERSTUNNELS garanderen de toegang tot de stad. De voetgangerstunnels zullen bijna volledig verwijderd worden tegen 12 mei 2024. Vanaf 13 mei 2024 is Tweerichtings FIETSverkeer en eenrichtings (stadinwaarts) AUTOverkeer terug mogelijk en dit tot einde werken.

Vaak gestelde vragen over de restauratie van de Menenpoort
De afgelopen jaren voerde de Commonwealth War Graves Commission uitgebreid onderzoek om de staat van de Menenpoort te inspecteren. Dit leerde ons dat de Menenpoort op korte termijn nood heeft aan conservatie- en restauratiewerken om op lange termijn het behoud van het Monument te kunnen garanderen.
De structuur en stabiliteit van het Monument zijn in goede staat, maar wanneer men dichterbij kijkt, is er erosie en schade dat moet worden aangepakt om toekomstige verslechtering te vermijden.
De restauratie omvat het conserverend reinigen en herstellen van de natuursteen elementen, en het integraal hervoegen van de bakstenen gevel. Ook de herdenkings-panelen worden conserverend gereinigd en waar nodig gerestaureerd, en het dak en de waterdichting worden grondig aangepakt. Bijkomend worden nog diverse herstellingen uitgevoerd aan de kelders, de trappentorens, de plafonds en de bronzen oculi (ronde openingen in het dak).
Innovatie, duurzaamheid en veilige toegankelijkheid vormen de rode draad doorheen deze restauratie. Bij elk onderdeel van de werken staat de recuperatie van authentieke materialen voorop – passend binnen het conservatiebeleid van de Commonwealth War Graves Commission.
De werken starten op 17 april 2023 en zullen in de zomer van 2025 afgewerkt zijn.
We willen de doorgang onder de Menenpoort doorheen de werken zoveel mogelijk garanderen: voor voetgangers in twee richtingen, voor verkeer éénrichting (stadinwaarts).
Om de veiligheid van het publiek en de ambachtsmannen te verzekeren, zal het soms noodzakelijk zijn om de doorgang voor verkeer tijdelijk af te sluiten. Over de looptijd van de werken (twee jaar), schatten we dat de verkeersdoorgang 12 weken (gespreid over vier periodes) zal afgesloten worden. Voetgangers zullen ten allen tijde via de voetgangerstunnels de Menenpoort kunnen gebruiken (na de werkuren).

De Menenpoort is niet toegankelijk voor het publiek tijdens de duur van de werken. Om de veiligheid van de bezoekers en ambachtsmannen te garanderen zijn stellingen en werfafsluitingen noodzakelijk. Verschillende alternatieve en innovatieve mogelijkheden worden voorzien om het Monument te ontdekken tijdens de werken.
Wederkerige evenementen werden meegenomen in de projectplanning van de restauratie. Stad Ieper en andere organiserende partijen zijn nauw betrokken bij het project.
Afhankelijk van de aard van een evenement en de plaatsvindende werken, zal een evenement plaatsvinden nabij de Menenpoort of zal een alternatieve locatie worden gezocht.

Ja, de werken zullen zijn afgerond tegen de honderdste verjaardag van de Menenpoort.
De omgeving rond de Menenpoort wordt gedeeltelijk ingenomen door de werfinrichting. De parking Hoornwerk en Kauwekijnstraat (busparkings) blijven beschikbaar zoals gewoonlijk.
Tijdens de vollege looptijd van de werken, worden de naampanelen bedekt door werfafsluiting en/of stellingen. Dit betekent dat bezoekers de namen op het monument niet fysiek kunnen bekijken.
De Last Post ceremonie zal blijven doorgaan tijdens de werken.
Echter, zal de locatie van de plechtigheid afhankelijk zijn van de werken. De Last Post plechtigheid vindt momenteel plaats op de brug voor de Menenpoort (kant Frenchlaan).

Bressers Erfgoed, een toonaangevend architectenbureau met jarenlange ervaring en in het bijzonder met historisch erfgoed, werd aangeduid als architect voor het project.
Op basis van een openbare aanbesteding werd Monument Vandekerckhove aangesteld voor de uitvoer van de werken.
De veiligheidscoordinator tijdens de werken is IVW-Consult.
We verwachten dat het totale restauratiebudget meer dan 3 miljoen euro zal bedragen.
De Commonwealth War Graves Commission krijgt een subsidie van 1,6 miljoen Euro na een premie-aanvraag op de thematische oproep ‘Erfgoed en Toerisme’ die door Vlaams Minister van Onroerend Erfgoed Matthias Diependaele in 2021 werd gelanceerd. Ook de Stad Ieper heeft voor dit project 300.000 euro subsidie in zijn budget voor de komende jaren opgenomen.
Het restbedrag wordt betaald door de Commonwealth War Graves Commission. Haar zes deelstaten (Verenigd Koninkrijk, Australië, Canada, Indië, Nieuw-Zeeland en Zuid-Afrika) financieren de CWGC in verhouding tot het respectievelijk aantal slachtoffers van de twee Wereldoorlogen.
Alles is in het werk gesteld om hinder tot een minimum te beperken tijdens de bouwperiode voor het restauratieproject bij het Monument van Ieper (Menenpoort) tussen april 2023 en de zomer van 2025
Er worden voetgangerstunnels aangelegd om de doorgang van en naar het centrum van Ieper mogelijk te maken. Uitzonderlijk zal het verkeer onder de Menenpoort afgesloten worden (voor auto’s, fietsers en voetgangerstunnels) worden gecommuniceerd op onze website.
Toegang tot de Menin Gate Moments Exhibition is mogelijk via één van de volgende twee routes:
Route één (foto links): Toegang is mogelijk door stellingstrap te beklimmen die leidt naar een geasfalteerd pad. Het pad loopt omhoog naar de rechterkant van het monument.
Route twee (foto rechts): Deze route is rolstoeltoegankelijk.
Volg de Bollingstraat voor ruim 200 meter in zuidelijke richting tot voorbij de Sint-Jacobskerk te volgen, is het mogelijk via een geasfalteerd hellend pad de vestingen te bereiken. Sla bovenop de vestingen links af en volg het pad richting de de Menin Gate Moments Exhibition. De totale afstand van deze route bedraagt ongeveer 570 meter.
Ja, een asbesthoudende laag die zich op de plafonds van tongewelf en de gaanderijen bevindt dient te worden verwijderd. Group Monument werkt hiervoor samen met een door de overheid erkende asbestverwijderaar Asbest Care.
De strengste saneringsmethode wordt toegepast tijdens het verwijderen van de asbesthoudende laag die zich op de plafonds van het monument bevinden. De betrokken zones worden volledig hermetisch afgesloten. Daarenboven worden dagelijks controles uitgevoerd door een onafhankelijk extern laboratorium. Deze werken worden gecontroleerd door ‘Toezicht Welzijn op het Werk’.
