Selby Cemetery - War Graves Week Tours

For War Graves Week, join us on a guided tour of some of the war graves at Selby Cemetery and find out more about your local history!

War Graves Week is an initiative aimed at encouraging people from the local community to come together and discover the World War heritage on their doorstep – learning about the stories of those commemorated by the CWGC in Selby and the skills, dedication and expertise of those CWGC staff and volunteers who work to keep their memory alive.

There are over 80 Commonwealth War Graves Commission (CWGC) casualties buried at Selby Cemetery. The First World War burials are mainly local men who were buried in family plots throughout the site. During the Second World War, a portion of land was set aside by the local authorities for service war burials and this plot contains mainly air crew from nearby RAF stations. The casualties include airmen from Canada, Australia and New Zealand. On the tour you will learn some of their stories as well as the history and work of the CWGC.

Practicalities:

The starting point for the tour is just inside the main cemetery gates on Long Mann Hills Road, Selby. Parking is on the surrounding streets, please be mindful of the neighbours.

Please come dressed for the weather and terrain. The tour involves walking on grass as well as paths and will last for approximately 60 minutes.
