The following details are given in the London Gazette of 13th June, 1944 : "Awarded the George Cross for most conspicuous gallantry in carrying out hazardous work in a very brave manner."
L.A.C. Spooner, a student Navigator was under instruction during a flight when the Pilot became unconscious. None of the other students were capable of flying the machine so Spooner seized the controls and ordered everybody to bale out. He then attempted to land the plane, which he had never done before. He was unsuccessful and crashed killing himself and the still unconscious Pilot.
