Dvr. Hughes was driving a three ton lorry full of ammunition and explosives into the Lyemun Barracks, Hong Kong, when he noticed the load was on fire. Instead of running for safety he did everything possible to put out the fire and shouted to warn all others to clear the area. He was killed when the whole load exploded but he had saved many lives with his warnings.
