CWGC Response - Law Commission Report on Cemeteries

St Mary's Twyning

We warmly welcome the Law Commission’s wider review of burial and cremation law, and in particular its focus on Commonwealth war graves (and MOD graves) and the need to ensure these are protected in law.

We are grateful for the thoughtful way the Law Commission has engaged with us throughout the consultation, and we are pleased to see our shared discussions reflected so clearly in its final recommendations.

As these proposals progress, we look forward to continued collaboration to help ensure that the legal protections for Commonwealth war graves in England and Wales remain robust, meaningful and enduring. For us, safeguarding the physical places of commemoration for service personnel who lost their lives in the World Wars and the memory of those who gave their lives for our freedoms is not simply a responsibility — it is a duty we honour with profound respect.
