Heritage Challenge 2025: stem op de ijskelder van Bedford House Cemetery!
The serene Bedford House Cemetery, recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2023, has a multifaceted history dating back to the 18th and 19th centuries. Before the First World War devastated the area and architect Von Berg decided to establish a cemetery here, the site was a castle estate that flourished in the second half of the 19th century and the early 20th century. Rozendael Castle was located in an award-winning castle park with moats and an ice house.
During the First World War, the castle was converted into headquarters and a nursing station, but by the end of the war, the castle grounds had been completely destroyed. What remained was a devastated landscape with castle and ice cellar ruins.
The ice cellar ruins are still there and are part of the protected heritage, which means that the CWGC has to maintain, consolidate and restore them. To make this financially feasible, the Commonwealth War Graves Commission is participating in the Heritage Challenge 2025, organised by the Royal Institute for Cultural Heritage of Belgium (KIK / IRPA) with the financial support of the National Lottery.
What is the Heritage Challenge?
In 2030, the KIK / IRPA will celebrate Belgium's 200th anniversary. To mark this occasion, the KIK/ IRPA has launched a competition: over a period of ten years, they will select one heritage treasure each year that is in urgent need of help.
The aim? To secure the future of at least ten heritage treasures by 2030.
How? The KIK / IRPA challenges the general public to choose their favourite heritage treasure from eight nominated Belgian heritage treasures. By voting, the public helps to raise awareness and support for the restoration. The winner will receive €25,000 worth of expertise from the Royal Institute for Cultural Heritage. In addition, the KIK undertakes to assist the winner in seeking additional funding to enable a full restoration of the heritage object.

L'histoire à rebondissements du cimetière de Bedford House
Le paisible cimetière de Bedford House, inscrit au patrimoine mondial de l'UNESCO depuis 2023, a une histoire à rebondissements qui remonte aux XVIII et XIXe siècles.
Avant que la Première Guerre mondiale ne ravage la région et que l'architecte Von Berg ne décide d'y créer un cimetière, le site était un château qui a connu son apogée dans la seconde moitié du XIXe siècle et au début du XXe siècle. Le château de Rozendael était en effet situé dans un parc paysager primé, avec des douves et une glacière.
Pendant la Première Guerre mondiale, le château a été transformé en quartier général militaire et en infirmerie, mais à la fin de la guerre, le domaine était complètement détruit. Il ne restait plus qu'un paysage dévasté avec les ruines du château et la glacière.
Les ruines de la glacière sont toujours présentes et font partie du patrimoine protégé, ce qui signifie que la CWGC doit les entretenir, les consolider et les restaurer. Afin de rendre cela financièrement possible, la Commonwealth War Graves Commission participe au Challenge Patrimoine 2025, organisé par l'Institut royal du patrimoine artistique (IRPA) avec le soutien financier de la Loterie Nationale de Belgique.
Qu'est-ce que le Challenge Patrimoine ?
En 2030, le KIK célébrera le 200e anniversaire de la Belgique. Pour marquer cet anniversaire, le KIK a lancé un concours : pendant dix ans, il sélectionnera chaque année un trésor patrimonial qui a besoin d'une aide urgente.
L'objectif ? Assurer l'avenir d'au moins dix trésors patrimoniaux d'ici 2030.
Comment agir ? l’IRPA met le grand public au défi de choisir son trésor patrimonial préféré parmi les huit trésors belges nominés. En votant, le public contribue à sensibiliser et à soutenir la restauration. Un comité soigneusement sélectionné suit de près le Challenge Patrimoine et surveille la manière dont les participants font la promotion de leurs trésors patrimoniaux.
Le lauréat recevra une récompense de 25 000 € en expertise de la part de l'Institut royal du patrimoine artistique. De plus, l'IRPA s'engage à aider le lauréat dans sa recherche de financements supplémentaires afin de permettre la restauration complète de l'objet patrimonial.

De veelzijdige geschiedenis van Bedford House Cemetery
Het serene Bedford House Cemetery, sinds 2023 erkend als UNESCO-werelderfgoed, heeft een veelzijdige geschiedenis die teruggaat tot de 17de eeuw. Voordat de Eerste Wereldoorlog het gebied verwoestte en architect Von Berg besloot om hier een begraafplaats op te richten, was de site een kasteeldomein dat in de tweede helft van de 19e eeuw en het begin van de 20e eeuw floreerde. Kasteel Rosendaal lag namelijk in een bekroond kasteelpark met grachten en een 19de eeuwse ijskelder.
Tijdens de Eerste Wereldoorlog werd het kasteel omgebouwd tot hoofdkwartier en verpleegpost, maar tegen het einde van de oorlog was het kasteeldomein volledig verwoest. Hoewel de site nooit in Duitse handen viel, bleef er een verwoest landschap over met kasteel- en ijskelderruïnes.
De ijskelderruïnes zijn nog steeds aanwezig en maken deel uit van het beschermde erfgoed, wat betekent dat de CWGC ze moet onderhouden en restaureren. Om dit financieel haalbaar te maken, neemt de Commonwealth War Graves Commission deel aan de Heritage Challenge 2025, georganiseerd door het Koninklijk Instituut voor Kunstpatrimonium (KIK) met de financiële steun van de Nationale Loterij.
Wat is de Erfgoed Challenge?
In 2030 viert het KIK de 200ste verjaardag van België. Ter ere van die verjaardag introduceerde het KIK een wedstrijd: gedurende tien jaar zullen ze elk jaar één erfgoedschat selecteren die dringend hulp nodig heeft.
Het doel? Tegen 2030 de toekomst van minstens tien erfgoedschatten veiligstellen.
Hoe? Het KIK daagt het grote publiek uit om uit acht genomineerde Belgische erfgoedschatten hun favoriete erfgoedschat te kiezen. Door te stemmen helpt het publiek het bewustzijn en de steun voor de restauratie te vergroten. Een zorgvuldig geselecteerd comité volgt de Heritage Challenge op de voet en monitort hoe de deelnemers hun erfgoedschatten promoten. De winnaar wordt beloond met € 25.000 aan expertise van het Koninklijk Instituut voor het Kunstpatrimonium. Bovendien verbindt het KIK zich ertoe om de winnaar te helpen bij het zoeken naar bijkomende financiering om een volledige restauratie van het erfgoedobject mogelijk te maken.
We ambiëren om de ijskelder te herbestemmen tot een natuur inclusief gebouwtje.
