New Exhibition Shines Light on the role of Greece and Cyprus in the Second World War
A new exhibition has open opened this month in Cyprus, 1940, People and Images, which seeks to explore the story of Greece and Cyprus during the Second World War. The exhibition is supported by CWGC, and working alongside the exhibition team, we hope it will encourage visitors to learn more about some of the fascinating CWGC sites on the island.
Hosted by the Bank of Cyprus Cultural Foundation, visitors to the exhibition will be able to find out more about the astonishing stories of 30,000 Cypriot volunteers who joined the British armed forces during the Second World, hundreds of which died on the fronts and buried in 56 cemeteries in 16 countries. It will also include haunting accounts of the extraordinary courage of the 14,000 Greek resistance members who lost their lives during the German occupation of their homeland.
Alongside the exhibition, CWGC is working with the British High Commission in Nicosia to organise a programme of events, including film screenings, workshops and seminars by the University of Cyprus and visits to CWGC cemeteries on the island, giving the opportunity to participants to learn more about the personal stories of the fallen.
Future tours will be focusing on CWGC’s Nicosia War Cemetery which is situated within the UN Buffer Zone. The cemetery contains the Cyprus Memorial, which commemorates the officers and men of the Cyprus Regiment and the Cyprus Volunteer Force who lost their lives in Cyprus during the Second World War and were buried in village cemeteries in various parts of the island.
Visitors will find the exhibition at the Bank of Cyprus Cultural Foundation on Faneromeni Street in Nicosia. Opening hours are 10am to 7pm, Monday to Sunday and runs until 31.12.2019, entry is free.
