Plymouth Naval Memorial to be cleaned and restored
The Plymouth Naval Memorial is being cleaned and restored this summer. Over the next three months visitors will see workers preserving this iconic landmark on the city’s seafront.
Large sections of stone are being steam cleaned, while the name panels will be re-bronzed and the pavement cleaned and repointed.
Also being restored are the distinctive statues of naval personnel and the bronze figures of Neptune and Aphrodite that flank the northern entrance.
At times parts of the memorial will be cordoned off to allow the work to take place safely. Anyone wishing to visit a specific name during the project is invited to speak to staff on site.
Plymouth Naval Memorial is one of three identical memorials in the UK that commemorate missing men and women of the Royal Navy.
It was designed by Sir Robert Lorimer and unveiled in1924. After an extension to include missing of the Second World War, it now lists more than 23,000 dead.
