Searching For Private John McLeod, Nova Scotia Regiment, CEF

The Commonwealth War Graves Commission (CWGC) is searching for the specific lot or the cemetery of Private John McLeod's interrment.

Extensive online research has been conducted and paid copies of relevant war records have been received but none include details of his burial location. The CWGC requires documentary evidence to confirm his burial location such as an obituary, parish record or other official records.

Private John McLeod's service file is available online from Library and Archives Canada. The Commission possesses a copy of his Prince Edward Island (PEI) death registration which states he died in Lorne Valley but there is no reference to his burial location. The Commission contacted the Lorne Valley Cemetery(formerly known as St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church Cemetery) since he was Presbyterian and died in Lorne Valley. It does not have a burial record nor is he commemorated on a marker.

The CWGC purchased a copy of the Lorne Valley Cemetery transcript from the Prince Edward Island Genealogical Society (PEIGS) to locate other McLeod family members in the cemetery; the Commission believes his brothers James and Alexander and possibly his sister Jane are buried in the cemetery according to a comparison between the 1901 census and the cemetery transcript.

The CWGC has focused its efforts on the Lorne Valley Cemetery as it was originally the Presbyterian cemetery; however, it is possible Private McLeod is buried in another local cemetery. The Commission has not yet located any church records which have been helpful in its research.
