Update: Menin Gate Name Panels to Be Visible by Spring 2025

The restoration of the Menin Gate in Ypres is entering its final stages, marking a significant milestone in the preservation of this iconic First World War memorial.

Since April 2023, the Menin Gate has been surrounded by scaffolding as part of an extensive restoration project.

Last week, the temporary roof, installed to ensure work on the roof could proceed regardless of weather, was removed. Walkways for inspections, maintenance, and the poppy drop are installed.

From 9 until 20 December 2024, work will begin to dismantle the first sections of scaffolding. By spring 2025, all name panels in the main hall and galleries will once again be visible to the public.

The Last Post Ceremony will continue in the main hall without disruption.

Progress Since our Last Update

Facade Restoration: The brick and natural stone facades have been repaired and repointed, with intricate natural stonework details, such as the lion atop the monument, carefully restored.

Name Panels: The name panels were repaired where needed. Only two of the 1,210 panels required complete replacement.

Structural Enhancements: The old metal staircases (in the Memorial corners) were removed, restored, and reinstalled.

Audio system & Lighting: The monument has been equipped with a modern audio system. Preparations for new architectural lighting are also underway.

Traffic and Access Updates

To ensure safety during the scaffolding removal (9–20 December), the Menin Gate will be closed to traffic. However, pedestrian walkways will remain open after working hours and on weekends. Once the scaffolding is removed, single-direction traffic under the Gate will resume.

Next: installation of the Living Roof

From mid-January, the installation of a Living Roof will begin. A living roof, also known as a green roof, is a roof system where vegetation is covering a structure. This vegetation-covered roof will enhance the longevity of the monument, support biodiversity, improve air quality, and optimise rainwater drainage. This innovative addition reflects the Commonwealth War Graves Commission’s (CWGC) commitment to sustainable preservation.
