Wildfire at Catania War Cemetery

A wild fire broke out in the area surrounding Catania War Cemetery, Sicily on Tuesday 29 July.

A CWGC spokesman said:
"Following the breakout of wildfire in the area of Catania War Cemetery in Sicily yesterday, we evacuated all of our staff on site, and everyone is safe and well.

"Sadly, the fire damaged some trees, plant life and fencing but no further damage to the cemetery itself has been reported. We are hugely grateful to Canadair aircraft and firefighting helicopters for their response in putting out the fire and protecting our site."
