Work in Camberwell allows CWGC to mark war graves for first time

The regeneration of Camberwell Old Cemetery by the London Borough of Southwark has enabled the Commonwealth War Graves Commission (CWGC) to mark 24 war graves for the first time.

Since the regeneration plans were announced the CWGC has been actively engaged with Southwark over plans for the cemetery.

The (CWGC) previously agreed with the London Borough of Southwark that no war graves would be disturbed during the planned works at Camberwell Old Cemetery, that no burials will take place above the war graves and that we will be able to mark graves which were previously inaccessible.

The most recent phase of the regeneration scheme has enabled the CWGC to mark 24 war graves that previously could not be marked. The war casualties were previously commemorated by a memorial screen wall rather than the familiar CWGC headstone – a not uncommon situation at UK cemeteries.

The CWGC will continue to work with the London Borough of Southwark as it develops the site and plans are underway to mark many more graves in the coming months.
