The United Kingdom Ministry of Defence and the Commonwealth War Graves Commission announce the burial service for an Unknown Soldier of The Black Watch (Royal Highlanders) and an Unknown Scottish Soldier. The inauguration of our new extension at Loos British Cemetery will take place during the service.

The burials will be conducted with full military honours, led by a military padre, with bearer parties from the Royal Regiment of Scotland.

The inauguration marks only the second time since the end of the Second World War that the Commonwealth War Graves Commission has opened such a significant commemorative burial site. You can be part of this historic event.

Event Information:

When: 11:00-12:00 hrs, Thursday 26th September 2024, after which the cemetery will be open to visitors.

Location: Loos British Cemetery Extension, Loos-en-Gohelle, France.

Ballot Information:

Registration for the ballot for one pair of free tickets will be via a link on this page from Monday 15th July to Friday 26th July 2024. 

Tickets will be randomly allocated, and all applicants will be notified by Wednesday 31st July on the outcome of the ballot.

  • We have a strict non-smoking and no vaping policy at our events.
  • You will comply with all relevant health and safety announcements and regulations when attending the event.
  • Loos British Cemetery and extension is a site of burial and commemoration. We trust all visitors will behave in a respectful and appropriate manner.
  • During the ceremony we request no photography or recording equipment be used. Please ensure your electronic equipment, especially mobile phones, are switched off or set to silent before entering the event.

The Promoter is the Commonwealth War Graves Commission (“CWGC”) of 2 Marlow Road, Maidenhead, Berkshire, SL6 7DX, (a Royal Charter organisation with registration number RC000136) (“we” “our” us”)

“CWGC” is offering the opportunity to enter a public ballot (“Ballot”) to attend this extraordinary occasion and be allocated a pair of free tickets to the opening of the new extension at the CWGC’s Loos British Cemetery (“the Event”). The Event will take place at 11:00am CEST on 26th September 2024.

1. By entering the Ballot, you are agreeing to be bound by these terms and conditions. 

2. The Ballot is open to anyone over the age of 18, except employees of CWGC, the Commonwealth War Graves Foundation, or their immediate family members. 

3. The Ballot is free to enter, and no purchase is necessary. 

4. All Ballot entries must be submitted via our website: Dedication of our new extension at Loos British Cemetery and one entry per person is permitted. We may remove entries if we have reason to believe that more than one entry has been made from the same person or if these terms and conditions have not been complied with 

5. The opening date for entries is 09:00 BST / 10:00 CEST on 15th July 2024. The closing date is 12.00pm BST / 13.00 CEST 26th July 2024. Entries received after this time will not be included in the Ballot. 

6. CWGC accepts no responsibility for entries not successfully completed due to a technical fault, technical malfunction, computer hardware or software failure, satellite, network or server failure of any kind. 

7. A maximum of two tickets will be allocated (per entry) by random draw (“Draw”) performed by a computer process on or before 31st July 2024 ("Draw Date"). A total of 300 free tickets (150 pairs) to the Event are available. CWGC will prioritise residents of Loos-en-Gohelle (“Residents”) for up to 50 of those tickets (25 pairs). If there are 25 or fewer entries from Residents, all of those entrants shall be successful and any spare tickets will be returned to the main Draw. If there are more than 25 entries from Residents, those entries will go into a separate draw, where 25 Residents will be successful, and the surplus Residents’ entries will go into the main Draw.

8. Ticket holders will be notified by email (using details provided at entry) by 31st July 2024. Ticket holders must respond using the link provided in the email and by providing the information requested by CWGC to claim their tickets. If CWGC does not receive a response, or the Ticket holder does not supply all the requested information by 23.59 CEST / 22.59 BST on 5 August 2024 then the tickets will be forfeited and CWGC will select another ticket holder in accordance with the process described above and these tickets will be allocated by 9th September 2024. 

9. The tickets will be sent to ticket holders by email. Ticket holders must present either a printed or digital copy of the tickets at the Event, along with photographic ID (passport, driving licence, national identity card) in order to gain entry. Therefore, tickets are non- transferable and must not be transferred, sold or otherwise, to another person. 

10. Ticket holders are responsible for arranging their own travel and accommodation (if necessary) to and from the Event. Only ticket holders will be allowed entry to the Event. 

11. Ticket holders must arrive no later than 10:30am on 26th September 2024 to the Event. CWGC will do its best to allow ticket holders access to the Event if ticket holders are late arriving, but may have to wait for a suitable interval. However, we are not able to guarantee access to the Event if you are late. 

12. Ticket holders will be required to ensure that they comply with any directions from CWGC staff at the Event to ensure that it is an enjoyable occasion for all attendees. 

13. CWGC reserve the right to refuse ticket holders admission to the Event or to require ticket holders to leave the Event at any point on reasonable grounds and we may take any appropriate action to enforce this right. By way of example only, we may refuse admission or require ticket holders to leave if they: 

a. behave in advance of the Event or at the Event in a manner which, in our reasonable opinion has affected, or is likely to affect the enjoyment of other visitors;

b. in advance of the Event or at the Event, use threatening, abusive or insulting words or behaviour or act in a way which may provoke disorder, disturbance, upset or unrest or which is contrary to what we consider to be appropriate for commemoration;

c. in our reasonable opinion, are under the influence of drugs or have consumed an excessive amount of alcohol;

d. or are a risk to the safety of others and/or yourself.

14. If CWGC refuse ticket holders entry to the Event or ejects ticket holders from the Event CWGC accepts no responsibility for losses caused as a result.

15. CWGC my cancel or postpone the Event at its sole discretion and accepts no responsibility for losses caused as a result. 

16. Due to the high-profile nature of the Event, the CWGC reserves the right to impose additional security requirements on ticket holders. CWGC may refuse entry to the Event if ticket holders do not meet such security requirements. Such security requirements will be notified to ticket holders as soon as possible.

17. By attending the Event, ticket holders consent to be filmed, livestreamed, recorded and/or photographed. Ticket holders grant us the right to use recordings of any means and type on any media or promotional materials about our work or the Event. Any personal data contained within recordings or photographs will be processed in accordance with clause 20.

18. Use of recording equipment, including cameras and camera phones is strictly prohibited unless explicitly advised by us at the Event.

19. The tickets are non-exchangeable, non-transferable and no cash alternative is offered.

20. The decision of CWGC regarding any aspect of the Ballot is final and binding and no correspondence will be entered into.

21. CWGC must either publish or make available information that indicates that a valid award took place. To comply with this obligation CWGC will send the surname of winners to anyone who emails Enquiries@CWGC.org or writes to Marketing and Communications Department, Commonwealth War Graves Commission, 2 Marlow Road, Maidenhead, SL6 7DX (enclosing a self-addressed envelope) within one month after the closing date stated in paragraph 4, above. If you object to your surname being published or made available, please contact the CWGC at the details given above. In certain circumstances, CWGC may be legally obliged to provide this information to relevant authorities whether you have objected or not.

22. As far as legally permitted, CWGC will not in any circumstances be responsible or liable to compensate entrants or accept any liability for any loss, damage, personal injury or death occurring in connection with the Event except where it is caused by the negligence of CWGC. Statutory rights are not affected.

23. By entering the Ballot you consent to your personal data being process as set out in the CWGC’s Privacy Policies | CWGC.

24. These terms and conditions and this promotion are governed by English law and by entering ballot you agree that exclusive jurisdiction of the courts of England and Wales.

25. CWGC may amend these terms and conditions at any time.
