Cranwell St Andrew's Churchyard - War Graves Week Tours

War Graves Week is an initiative aimed at encouraging people from the local community to come together and discover the World War heritage on their doorstep – learning about the stories of those commemorated by the CWGC and the skills, dedication and expertise of those CWGC staff and volunteers who work to keep their memory alive.

Please note that this is NOT St Michael’s Church at RAF Cranwell, which is also on the B1429, and is 1½ miles west of the village.

MEETING POINT: Enter the churchyard through the western gate, opposite the Willows Tea Room, and meet in the open area at the eastern side of the plot.

Join Commonwealth War Graves Commission’s Public Engagement team volunteer guide Christopher Finn MPhil FRAeS for a tour of the CWGC’s plot at St Andrew’s Church Cranwell. The tour will explore: the formation and role of the CWGC; how the CWGC commemorates the fallen of the two World Wars; the role of the CWGC with respect to the inter and post-war service casualties; the link between St Andrew’s Church and the nearby RAF College Cranwell (including its original role as RNAS Cranwell) through the stories of some of those buried here; and the CWGC’s current outreach programme.

Please park on the public road to the north west of the cemetery and leave the layby on the main road, at the cemetery entrance, clear for any visitors with mobility needs.

Most of the site is accessible to wheelchair users. There are no toilet facilities.

The Willows Tea Room is on Willow Lane Cranwell, in the old Post Office. It serves hot and cold refreshments and lunches. It is strongly recommended that you book a table beforehand, especially for lunch, on 01400 261021, and say that you are on the “CWGC tour”

Please dress appropriately for the weather and wear suitable footwear.
