Glasgow Western Necropolis - War Graves Week Event
Around the world ordinary people do extraordinary things every day for their community. They do it today, and they did it during the world wars.
As part of War Graves Week 2023, join the Commonwealth War Graves Commission (CWGC) for a cemetery tour at Glasgow Western Necropolis!
In Glasgow Western Necropolis, the CWGC look after approximately 493 War Graves of the service personnel that served and died during the First or Second World War. In addition to the Commonwealth plots, this cemetery also contains Australian, Canadian, German, New Zealand, and South African war graves.
Come along, on this CWGC cemetery tour to learn more about the history of our organisation as well as the work we have done and continue to do to ensure the stories of the remarkable individuals who served and died during the world wars are not forgotten.
MEETING POINT: The Cross of Sacrifice - visible when you enter through the main cemetery gates. By Road From the M8 exit at Junction 16 and head north on A 879 Craighall Road. Travel 2.5 miles on this road leading into Saracen Street and Balmore Road . Turn left into Skirska Street then second right on Tresta Road. Through the housing estate the entrance to Western Necropolis is on right hand side past the entrance to St Kentigerns Cemetery at the end of the road. By Public transport Gilhochil Rail Station is two minutes’ walk from the main cemetery entrance. Trains from Queen Street Station travelling to Anniesland stop at this station.
Parking available both inside and outside the cemetery (crematorium parking); toilet access; no refreshments available.
Wheelchair/ mobility scooter access: The walk will encompass tarmac, gravel, and grass paths. There are slopes and it can be steep in some places.
Please dress appropriately for the weather and bring a water bottle with you if needed. The numbers on the tour will be limited to abide by any Government restrictions and social distancing rules at the time of the tours.
Under 12s may join the tour without a ticket if they are accompanied by a ticket holding adult.
