KAJIADO CEMETERY - CWGC

Location information

Kajiado is a town 50 kilometres due south of Nairobi, on the road to Namanga border crossing Arusha. The cemetery is 3 kilometres south of the railway station, set in open ground behind Kajiado Hospital. It is signposted from the main road.

Visiting information

ARRIVAL

The cemetery is signposted from the main road and there is also a sign on the gate at the main entrance.

PARKING

There is no car park at the cemetery.

There are tracks leading up to the main entrance and a scrubland area to the front of the cemetery, where it may be possible to park.

ACCESS, LAYOUT AND MAIN ENTRANCE

At the main entrance there is an approach aisle marked with white stone boulders.

The cemetery is enclosed within a high (1.75 metre) green metal fence.

The main double gate is 3 metres wide and opens inwards, into the cemetery.

Within the cemetery are headstones and a large tree.

There is an information sign with a metal engraved plaque mounted on a concrete pillar.

There is no seating at the cemetery.

There is no Register Box at the cemetery.

The internal cemetery paths are gravel and aggregate.

The ground level is firm and flat.

ALTERNATIVE ACCESS

There is no alternative access into the cemetery.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

The cemetery is open Monday to Friday 0600 hrs to 1800 hrs.

Outside of these hours, the cemetery gates are closed and padlocked.

Office opening Hours are Monday to Friday 0830 hrs to 1230 hrs and 1330 hrs to 1630 hrs – the offices are closed at weekends.

History information

This cemetery was begun in June 1915, and used (mainly by No. 3 Base Hospital) until August 1916. After the Armistice seven outlying graves were brought in and it was later used for civilian burials.

Kajiado Cemetery contains 26 Commonwealth burials of the First World War.
