Location information

Fauske is a town on the north-west coast of Norway near the head of the Saltfjord 45 kilometres east of Bodo and about 250 kilometres south of Narvik. Approaching from the south on the E6 main route to the north follow this route into the centre of town to the roundabout where the E6 is signposted to the right. Cross straight over this junction on to route 80 signposted to Bodo and follow this road for approximately 1 km until the white wooden church can be seen on the right. From the entrance facing the church turn right and follow the boundary fence alongside the road back towards the town for approximately 200 metres. The single private memorial to Private Bath in the form of a grey granite slab 1.5 metres high is approximately 5 metres in from the front boundary fence some 20 metres before reaching the side boundary of the churchyard, and 10 metres beyond the pathway leading from a secondary entrance to the churchyard.

History information

During the Second World War, Norway was of strategic importance to the Germans. Their invasion on 9 April 1940 was sudden and widespread and despite Allied intervention, the entire country was under German occupation by early June. Thereafter, Allied activity in Norway was confined to raids and special operations, with the Commonwealth air forces providing support to Norwegian resistance groups until the German capitulation in May 1945. There are no Commonwealth war cemeteries in Norway, those who died there being buried in civil cemeteries and churchyards. Fauske Churchyard contains one Commonwealth burial.
