History information
Yarmouth Mountain Cemetery Company was founded in 1859 and incorporated in 1860. The company is a registered non-profit organisation. According to newspapers of the day, this cemetery received the first attention of the townsfolk in 1859 when the subject of graveyards was brought up for discussion before the Yarmouth Free Discussion Club. The question of the evening was: "Is it sound policy, or compatible with reason, to continue burying the dead in the centre of the town?". The resulting resolution was passed unanimously, namely: "That the public graveyard is situated where in time it is likely to be surrounded by a dense population and as the existance of a burying ground in such a locality may be considered a grave obstacle as regards health and convenience". Thw land selected for the new cemetery was an eleven acre section 'in the back of town' on what was known as 'the mountain'. Additional land acquistions were made so that now the total area of the cemetery is approximately 40 acres. A self walking tour guide is also available that will take you through the entire cemetery and will provide you with interesting facts.
