History information

Since the early part of the 20th century the ancient practice of cremation instead of burial has been increasingly observed, and during the 1939-1945 War this last rite was accorded to servicemen and women when desired. The Tasmania Cremation Memorial commemorates three soldiers and one airman of the Australian forces who died in Tasmania and whose remains were cremated, and the ashes scattered, or buried where adequate commemoration was not possible. It takes the form of a bronze panel, affixed to the right-hand pier of the entrance gate to the War Graves Plot in Hobart (Cornelian Bay) Public Cemetery. The names are engraved on this panel together with an inscription which reads:- 1939-1945 THE SERVICEMEN WHO ARE HONOURED HERE DIED IN TASMANIA. THEIR REMAINS WERE CREMATED AND THE ASHES SCATTERED OR BURIED WHERE FULL COMMEMORATION COULD NOT BE GIVEN
