Location information
Hillside Cemetery is located halfway between the villages of Caix and Le Quesnel on the D41, and is accessible via a signposted road off the main road.
Visiting information
ARRIVAL
The cemetery is signposted, with a CWGC Direction sign off the D41 between the villages of Caix and Le Quesnel.
The cemetery is at the side of a single vehicle-width paved farm road.
PARKING
It is possible to park close to the cemetery along the front of the cemetery, within 10 metres of the main entrance.
There is space for up to 2 vehicles to park.
The ground is firm with a gravel and grass surface and slopes downhill from the road.
ACCESS LAYOUT AND MAIN ENTRANCE
Gently sloping grass is located in front of the entrance to the right of the parking area.
The main gate made up of two sections. The gate is 120 centimetres wide and accessed via a stone ramp on the right side of the main gate. There is paving in front of the gate. There is a shallow step down of approximately 25 mm at the junction of the paving and stone ramp.
The main gate is black metal, mid height (thigh level), with a central opening up-and-down latch in the centre, and opens into the cemetery.
The Cross of Sacrifice is at the front of the cemetery, to the left of the main entrance, with paving on either side of the Cross.
There is a raised grass area inside the entrance of the cemetery, with a stone wall level with the grass on the upper level. There is a single step down on either side of the Cross of Sacrifice, with the step approximately 50mm higher than the grass in the burial area. There is a grass ramp at the far-left side of the cemetery leading down to the burial area.
There is a stone bench built into the wall to the left of the entrance, with a raised paved area in front of the bench, approximately 50mm higher than the grass.
There is a Shelter Building at the bottom of the cemetery in line with the Cross of Sacrifice. There is an internal stone bench seating area with the Register Box mounted into the rear wall of the shelter above the bench.
ALTERNATIVE ACCESS
There is no alternative access into the cemetery.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
The cemetery burial area slopes downhill away from the parking area to the bottom of the cemetery.
There are several stone walls, steps and level changes around the burial area. Care should be taken while manoeuvring around the cemetery as there are areas where the ground drops suddenly.
The cemetery is permanently open.
History information
Le Quesnel village, which had been for sometime in Commonwealth hands, was captured by the Germans on 27 March 1918, but was retaken on the following 9 August by the 75th Canadian Infantry Battalion.
Hillside Cemetery was made by the Canadian Corps in August 1918.
The cemetery contains 108 First World War burials, three of them unidentified.
