Historical Note
The casualties named on this memorial were known to be buried in this cemetery but their graves were unmarked. They were originally commemorated by a nameless memorial with their names added to a cemetery register. In 2012, their names were added to the memorial.
You can find more information about historical inequalities in commemoration in our Special Committee’s report.
Location information
The town of Lumbo is situated on the mainland opposite Ilha da Mozambique, an island off the coast of the town of Mozambique. The cemetery is situated about 400 metres off the left side of the main road, just before the causeway to the island.
Visiting information
The cemetery is kept locked and the key is held by the watchman whose house is behind the cemetery.
History information
Lumbo British Cemetery was made after the First World War to take the Commonwealth burials from Lumbo, Chinde, Quelimane and Villa Bocafe European Cemeteries. The African and Indian casualties are buried elsewhere and their names are carved on memorial panels.
