Historical Note
Following the First World War, 18 graves of African servicemen in this cemetery were not marked with headstones, although the names of the casualties were included in a printed cemetery register. These men were commemorated by the nameless memorial to the missing at Dar es Salaam. In 2019 a special memorial listing the names of these casualties was erected in Pemba Cemetery.
You can find more information about historical inequalities in commemoration in our Special Committee’s report.
