Our Biodegradable Wreaths: Ready for Another Year

Nearly five years ago, the Commission partnered with a local florist to explore creating a fully biodegradable wreath—a sustainable, environmentally friendly option for visitors wishing to honour loved ones at our cemeteries and memorials. What began as a small experiment has since grown into a loved items by our visitors to place at the grave or memorial during their visit.

Over time, the wreath’s design and production process have evolved significantly. Demand soon exceeded what one florist could support, and what followed is one of our most inspiring community stories: a dedicated group of local volunteers came together and gradually developed into a steady, passionate production team. Each volunteer carefully crafts every wreath by hand, ensuring every piece is unique, decorated with thoughtfully selected combinations of dried flowers.

Crafted From the Landscape of the Former Battlefields

Each wreath is handmade from fresh willow grown on the former battlefields of the region—a symbolic connection to the land where so many fell. Soft willow catkins add a gentle, natural touch of white that never fades, representing our enduring commitment to remembering the lives lost during both World Wars. The harmonious blend of dried flowers adds a subtle burst of colour among the headstones, offering a comforting and respectful tribute.

Every wreath also includes a biodegradable message card, allowing you to leave a personal note of Remembrance.

Returning Back to the Soil

Once your wreath has completed its natural cycle, our teams collect it and return it to our compost farm at Bedford House Cemetery. There, it breaks down naturally and becomes nutrient-rich compost—eventually helping to nourish the grounds of one of our cemeteries.

Supporting Remembrance for Future Generations

Proceeds from every wreath contribute directly to the Commonwealth War Graves Foundation, helping us deliver new educational activities that bring the stories of the World Wars to life for people of all ages. Your purchase helps ensure that the men and women who served will never be forgotten.
