The following details are given in the London Gazette of 2nd August, 1917: For most conspicuous bravery and initiative." Under intense artillery fire 2nd Lieutenant Thomas Harold Broadbent Maufe, R.G.A., on his own initiative and unaided, repaired the telephone line between forward and rear positions, enabling his battery to open fire immediately. This officer also extinguished a fire in an advanced ammunition dump regardless of the risk presented by gas shells which he knew to be in the dump." By his great promptitude, resource, and entire disregard of his own safety he set an exceptionally fine example to all ranks.
