Joined 92nd Highlanders 1869; served in Afghan War (1878-80); South African War (1881); Soudan War (1884-5); A.D.C. to H.M. Queen Victoria (1898-1901); to H.M. King Edward VII (1901); commanded 9th Brigade and a Field Column of the South African Field Force (1900); Adjutant-General to the Forces and Second Military Member of the Army Council (1904-9); General Officer Commanding-in-Chief Southern Command (1909-11); Inspector-General of the Home Forces from 1911; General (1910). An extract from the Annual Register, 1914 reads:-. having worked at the War Office, though seriously ill, until a week before his death.
