Air Marshal Sir Stuart Atha appointed as CWGC Commissioner

Air Marshal Sir Stuart Atha has joined the CWGC as Air Force Commissioner.

A retired Air Marshal, his career spanned 35 years, during which he flew a number of aircraft including the Hawk, Harrier, Typhoon and Spitfire and Hurricane. He commanded at all levels, including as Station Commander at RAF Coningsby and Air Officer Commanding No 1 Group, during which he was responsible for the 2012 London Olympics Air Security Plan.

His staff experience included operationally focused tours in the MOD and PJHQ. His final tour was as the Air Member for Operations on the Air Force Board.

After leaving the RAF in 2019, he joined BAE Systems as a Director on the Air Board. He is an Honorary Professor at the University of Nottingham, and Patron of the Jon Egging Trust, a charity that provides opportunity to disadvantaged young people.

Sir Stuart said: "It is a great privilege to join the Commonwealth War Graves Commission. Throughout my RAF career I was very aware of the debt we owe to previous generations, not least when I was flying with the RAF’s Battle of Britain Memorial Flight. As the RAF Commissioner I look forward to carrying on the work of the late Air Marshal Dr David Walker. Like David, I care passionately about our mission to commemorate all those who paid the ultimate sacrifice in the service of their country and I look forward to doing all I can to keep their memories alive."
