Gavin was the son of the Hon. Patrick Bowes-Lyon and the Hon. Mrs. P. Bowes-Lyon. He was the cousin of Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon, later Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother.

Lady Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon lost her brother Captain the Hon. Fergus Bowes-Lyon, of the Black Watch, who was killed at Loos in 1915, as well as two cousins: Lieutenant Charles Lindsay Claude Bowes-Lyon, who was killed at Ypres in 1914, and Lieutenant Gavin Patrick Bowes-Lyon.

Gavin served with the 3rd Battalion of the Grenadier Guards and was killed in action during the Battle of Cambrai. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the CWGC Cambrai Memorial.
