One day in a world war - International Day of Education 2024
Did you know that the Commonwealth War Graves Commission produces a range of educational resources and classroom content?
We want to help educate the next generation on the history of the world wars and help share the stories of the 1.7million men and women we commemorate at our sites across the globe.
One Day in a World War
One of our latest resources is One Day in a World War – a classroom resources that encourages students to explore the CWGC online database. Not only will this help hone vital research and critical thinking skills, but it is also an opportunity to discuss the size, scale and global nature of the world wars.
We’ve picked Saturday 16 September 1916 as a case study for the First World War.
Using an extract from our data, casualty stories and PowerPoint presentation, this resource will guide you through various tasks and activities that will broaden your students’ knowledge of the world wars, where in the world the fighting took place, and where the casualties had come from.
This resource is a great collection for classes and groups wanting to learn more about the wider context of the two world wars while developing an understanding of data and evidence based research.

Medicine on the Western Front - How effective was medical care on the Western Front in the First World War? This education pack, originally developed as part of UCLs First World War Centenary Battlefield Tours Programme, enables students to explore how effective medical care was on the Western Front in the First World War.
It also includes guidance as to how to relate each section to the visible evidence of the battlefield sites of the Western Front today, with examples of activities that could be used at CWGC cemeteries or war memorials around Ypres in Belgium.
These are just some of our range of educational resources available through our website. You can find our entirely library in our Education section – or discover how to book a talk or a tour of one of our sites for your group.
