Location information

Kisumu is on Lake Victoria, 350 kilometres north-west of Nairobi. The cemetery is on the north-western side of the town on the road to the Busia border post with Uganda. The dirt road to the cemetery is to the left (west) of the road out of Kisumu about 300 metres past the entrance to Kisumu airport. The dirt road to the cemetery runs between the Ministry of Works Depot and the Caltex petrol station. The turning is marked by an RDS (often damaged by passing lorries). The cemetery is around 500 metres down the dirt road, and is part of a larger disused civil cemetery.

ARRIVAL

The cemetery is signposted.

PARKING

It is possible to park within one metre of the main entrance on a short gravel topped track that runs from the side of a track branching off the road, to the main entrance.

The aisle is one car width wide; the ground is flat and firm and the surface is loose grey gravel.

There is a deep 20 cm white block kerbstone along either side of the access track leading to the entrance.

It is also possible to park along a compacted dirt track in the front of the cemetery.

ACCESS, LAYOUT AND MAIN ENTRANCE

The cemetery is rectangular shaped, surrounded with a tall (chest height), security fence.

The double main gate is 1.80 metres wide and opens into the cemetery. A sliding latch opens the left side of the gate.

There is a small 50 mm elevated concrete area under the main gate and creates the divide between the cemetery exterior and interior aggregate surface of the cemetery.

The Cross of Sacrifice is located near the rear left side of the cemetery.

There is a small visitor information panel on a stone bollard close to the main entrance.

ALTERNATIVE ACCESS

There is no alternative entrance into the cemetery.

Please proceed with caution when visiting this cemetery.

Visitors should not carry valuables or leave them unattended in vehicle.

The cemetery is open Monday to Friday between 0600 hrs and 1800 hrs.

Outside of the working hours, the cemetery gates are shut and padlocked.

History information

This is a civil cemetery used for War burials (chiefly by No. 4 Base Hospital) from July, 1915, to September, 1920. There are 9 Commonwealth burials of the 1914-1918 war, 4 were brought in after the Armistice, there are 9 German burials, all of the 12th September, 1914, which were brought from Kisii Boma. There are also 47 Commonwealth burials of the 1939-1945 war.
