History information
Windhoek, the capital, was surrendered on 13 May 1915. Six of the graves were brought in from Otjusandou, Otjihongwe, Regenstein, Duobib and Rehoboth station. Due to a proposed road widening scheme, in 1978 all the Commission headstones in the cemetery were placed in two semi circular rows around the Cross of Sacrifice, alternatively commemorating all those buried in the cemetery together with two 1914/18 casualties buried at Berseba Cemetery and four 1939/45 burials in an abandoned Windhoek cemetery. The planned road widening scheme was never completed and, in 2023, the graves of 82 casualties were re-marked with Commission headstones. 12 casualties whose graves have been lost remain alternatively commemorated around the Cross of Sacrifice.
