January 2024 – The Ladysmith area in Kwazulu Natal has been experiencing heavy rains and the roads are heavily flooded. Access to this cemetery is not possible at present.
Location information
Ladysmith lies about 240 kilometres north-west of Durban. The cemetery is about 2 kilometres from the centre of the town, situated on the banks of a small river which runs along the south-western boundary. The war graves (military plots and scattered) are all in the old section of the municipal cemetery opposite the new section which is still used for burials. To reach the cemetery follow Newcastle Road which leads out of town in the direction of Newcastle. Turn right into Willis Street, left into Illings Street, right into Cemetery Road, then right into the road which separates the old and new sections of the cemetery.
Visiting information
It is simple to locate the graves in the Military Plots 15 and 16 but advisable to consult the municipality or the Commission's South African Agency about the position of the scattered graves.
Major maintenance work will be taking place in the military plots from the Monday 28th November until the Sunday 04th December 2016. There will be no public access to these plots during this time.
History information
Ladysmith Cemetery contains two Commonwealth burials of the First World War and 181 burials from the Second World War. In addition there is the commemoration to a South African soldier who was killed when he fell down the Mont aux Sources Escarpment in the Bergville District of Natal, whose body could not be recovered. His name, PINCKNEY, is recorded on a Special Memorial erected near the other war graves in this cemetery, in Plot 17.
