The Provincial capital, Pretoria, named after the Voortrekker leader Pretorius, is also the seat of the South African government. It was an important military centre during the Second World War, with the Headquarters of Northern Command, a Military College, Military Hospital and a number of training camps. Most of the war graves of the 1939-1945 War in Pretoria are located in the Military Area on the southern outskirts of the city.
