Location information
Evans Head lies on the coast, just east of the Pacific Highway, 538 miles by road northeast of Sydney. The aerodrome was a Royal Australian Air Force Station during the war, from which aircraft carried out the reconnaissance and patrol duties necessary for the protection of shipping. It was also the home of No.1 Bombing and Gunnery School and No. 1 Air Observers School under the Empire Air Training Scheme. More than 5,500 RAAF personnel trained at Evans Head. The War Cemetery is within the General Cemetery, a mile north-west of the post office, near the aerodrome, and all the war graves are the graves of airmen.
