During the Second World War, Richmond Aerodrome was a base for squadrons of the Royal Australian Air Force engaged upon reconnaissance and submarine patrols, for the protection of shipping along the coast and to guard against possible attacks by carrier-borne Japanese aircraft of the principal towns and cities. The war cemetery contains 25 Second World War burials, most of them of airmen. The general cemetery contains a further two war graves.
