Location information
Kiel is a city in the north of Germany approx 100kms north of Hamburg. From the A7 motorway Hamburg to Flensburg take exit 12 (Ausfahrt 12) A215 BLUMENTHAL / KIEL follow direction KIEL and continue for approx 20kms. Follow the signs for B76 UNIVERSTAT / ECKERNFORDE and continue for approx 4kms, then follow the signs for NORD FRIEDHOF. Continue for approx 1km, (passing the football stadium of Holstein Kiel on the left) onto the WESTRING and the main cemetery entrance is on your right (CWGC Signposted). The cemetery can be found approx 100m inside the main cemetery entrance on the right. History information
Most of those buried in Kiel War Cemetery were airmen lost in bombing raids over northern Europe, whose graves were brought in from cemeteries and churchyards throughout Schleswig-Holstein, the Frisian Islands and other parts of north-western Germany. The cemetery contains 983 Commonwealth burials of the Second World War, 96 of them unidentified. There are also nine Polish war graves.
