Location information
La Bernerie-en-Retz is a village and seaside resort in the Department of the Loire-Atlantique. It lies on the north-eastern side of Bourgneuf Bay, 48 kilometres by road west-south-west of Nantes and 8 kilometres south-east of Pornic, a small town and fishing port. The Communal Cemetery, which is 360 metres from the main street, is on the eastern side of the village and south-west of the church. The graves are in a plot in the southern part in the angle of two of the boundary walls.

History information
The majority of the servicemen buried here perished when the troop ship S.S. "Lancastria" was sunk by enemy bombers off St. Nazaire on the 17 June 1940. There are now over 100, 1939-45 war casualties commemorated in this site. Of these, over 30 are unidentified and three soldiers known to be buried in this plot, whose graves could not be precisely located, are commemorated by special memorials, which bear the superscription "Buried near this spot".
