Location information

Lemmer, in the commune of Lemsterland, is a small port on the southern coast of Friesland. It lies 24 kilometres south of Sneek. This burial ground is on the northern outskirts of Lemmer on Straatweg, the road to Sneek. The Commonwealth war graves plot is in the south-west part of the cemetery.

ARRIVAL

The Commonwealth War Graves Commission (CWGC) plot is in the southwest corner of Lemmer civilian churchyard. There is a green cemetery sign at the entrance gate to the civil Cemetery, on Straatweg near the junction with Onderweegshof. There are no cemetery direction signs leading to the site.

PARKING

There is a brick paved single lane road to the CWGC plot inside the cemetery, approximately 150 metres from the gate. It is possible to park close to the gate at the end of the road. It is also possible to park outside the gate on the side of the main road. The main entrance gate is 3 metres wide and has a tall, open double vehicle width, metal gate with a paved brick path underneath.

ACCESS LAYOUT AND MAIN ENTRANCE

Access to the plot is through the main cemetery. The plot is located through an open gate adjacent to the parking area at the end of the access road. There is a chapel to the right of the open gate. The plot is located south of the central pathway leading to the chapel, approximately 30 metres from the access road entrance into the cemetery.

The Cross of Sacrifice is visible once inside the cemetery, part of the CWGC plot.

There are bench seating areas in the churchyard and close to the CWGC plot.

All the internal paths are flat and firm with a surface of loose gravel and earth.

ALTERNATIVE ACCESS

The only access to the cemetery and CWGC plot is via the main entrance.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

The cemetery is permanently open.

This site contains the graves of 44 airmen. Of these, 7 of the airmen from the United Kingdom and one from Canada are not identified.
