Location information
The Downs Crematorium, on the northern boundary of the Brighton and Preston Cemetery, has a separate entrance on the northern side in Bear Road.
Visiting information
The Cremation Memorial is a screen wall in the Garden of Rest on a site to the left of the entrance near the main drive. The names are inscribed on three panels on a Portland stone wall which stands in a semi-circular grass plot in the rose garden, enclosed by a beech hedge. Above the names is the superscription;
1939-1945 THESE MEMBERS OF HIS MAJESTY'S FORCES DIED IN THE SERVICE OF THEIR COUNTRY AND WERE CREMATED HERE.
History information
During the 1939-1945 War 29 Service men and women were cremated at the Downs Crematorium. They include 4 sailors, 14 men and women of the Army and 9 men and women of the Air Force, all belonging to the forces of the United Kingdom, 1 man of the Merchant Navy and 1 airman belonging to the Royal Australian Air Force.
