PIRAEUS NAVAL AND CONSULAR CEMETERY - CWGC

Location information

This is a fenced plot within Piraeus Municipal Cemetery at Drapetsona on the western outskirts of Piraeus. The name of the civil cemetery is Anastasis Nekrotafeio (Cemetery). Directions from the central port of Piraeus are to take Akti Kondil(west), at Gate 3 of the port, turn right onto Thesmoforiou Street and at the first traffic lights turn right onto Agio Dimitriou and take the second left onto Anapafseos. Continue for approximately 2 km on Anapafseos and this road shall take you direct to the cemetery. You can also get there by going to Piraeus Station on Metro Line 1, bus numbers 833 or 875 to bus stop: Anastasis.

History information

Piraeus was the scene of fighting between Allied and Greek forces on 1 December 1916, which resulted in the recognition by the Allied Powers of the Revolutionary Government of M. Venizelos. The Commonwealth graves are mostly grouped around the monument to ten casualties from HM Ships 'Exmouth' and 'Duncan' who died in December 1916. The cemetery contains 23 First World War burials. The Commission also cares for 12 non war naval graves within the cemetery.
