Visiting information

The Memorial can be viewed through the fenced enclosure at the side of the sports ground. Access to the enclosure requires the key, which is available from the ground maintenance office which is under the grandstand. Wheelchair access possible via main entrance.

History information

The West Africans who died during the First World War whilst serving with the Royal West African Frontier Force in West Africa, whose graves are not known, or are unmaintainable, are commemorated by name on memorials in the countries of their enlistment: men of Gambia at Bathurst (now Banjul), of Sierra Leone at Freetown, Nigerians at Abuja (originally at Lagos), and of Ghana at Kumasi (originally at Accra).

The memorial was erected by public subscription in MacCarthy Square, Banjul, facing the barracks. It records the names of the Infantry Company, and is accepted by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission as the Memorial to 37 casualties who are not commemorated elsewhere.
