Location information

Carloforte is situated on the west coast of the island of San Pietro, itself west of the southern tip of Sardinia. Drive west from Cagliari, on the route No.130 to Iglesias (about 40 kilometres). Continue west on the route No.126 to the port of Portoscuso (about 22 kilometres). Take the ferry to Caroloforte (about 30 minutes), then follow the direction signs to the cemetery. The cemetery is on the coast road south of the town about 1 kilometre from the ferry. Cemetery Address: Strada Provinciale 103 km 1.400 - Località Giunco (CA).

History information

The Italians entered the war on the Allied side, declaring war on Austria, in May 1915. Commonwealth forces were at the Italian front between November 1917 and November 1918. The Royal and Merchant Navies were active in the Mediterranean and Adriatic throughout the war and many of their dead are buried along the Italian coast. Carloforte Communal Cemetery contains eight Commonwealth burials of the First World War, all sailors lost in H.M.Tug "Dalkeith", which was sunk by enemy action in the Mediterranean on 29 April 1918.
