Location information
The Otago Provincial Memorial is situated in Dunedin (Anderson's Bay) Cemetery on Tomahawk Road, and lies on rising ground on the edge of the bay on the small strip of land between Otago Harbour and the ocean. The memorial is in the form of a flat tapered granite-faced concrete screen wall mounted on two pedestals and it stands behind a flagstaff on a paved area enclosed by low side walls.
History information
The memorial commemorates 31 New Zealand soldiers of the 1914-1918 War and 3 New Zealand airmen from the 1939-1945 War who enlisted in the Provincial District of Otago and who were either buried in New Zealand or buried at sea and who have no known grave. The names of the servicemen are engraved on three panels on the memorial and a fourth panel bears the following inscription:
1914 - 1918 ON THESE PANELS ARE THE NAMES OF THOSE MEMBERS OF THE ARMED FORCES WHO ENLISTED IN THIS DISTRICT WHO DIED IN THE SERVICE OF THEIR COUNTRY IN AND AROUND NEW ZEALAND OR EN ROUTE TO OVERSEAS SERVICE AND TO WHOM THE FORTUNES OF WAR DENIED A KNOWN AND HONOURED GRAVE. 1939 - 1945
