Location information

The memorial stands at the entrance to Auckland (Waikumete) Cemetery which is situated at the junction of Great North Road and Glenview Road, Glen Eden, on the western outskirts of Auckland. The memorial is in the form of a six foot concrete cube raised two feet above the ground and divided by a diagonal section to which the name panels are affixed.

History information

The memorial commemorates 40 New Zealand servicemen of the 1914-1918 War and 16 New Zealand servicemen from the 1939-1945 War, who enlisted in the Provincial District of Auckland and who were either buried in New Zealand or buried at sea and who have no known grave. The names of the servicemen are engraved on the memorial beneath the following inscription:

1914 - 1918 ON THESE PANELS ARE THE NAMES OF THOSE MEMBERS OF THE ARMED FORCES WHO ENLISTED IN THIS DISTRICT WHO DIED IN THE SERVICE OF THEIR COUNTRY IN AND AROUND NEW ZEALAND OR EN ROUTE TO OVERSEAS SERVICE AND TO WHOM THE FORTUNES OF WAR DENIED A KNOWN AND HONOURED GRAVE. 1939 - 1945
