Location information
The Cemetery is reached from the junction of the main road from the south up to Monkey Bay (by Lake Malawi) and the principal road into Mangochi. There are road direction signs at this junction and 800 metres towards Mangochi. The cemetery is on the right side approximately 30 metres from the edge of the road. There are two road direction signs opposite the cemetery.
Visiting information
Mangochi Town Cemetery is open every day between 06:00 and 18:00. It is located on a busy main road and there is no parking available.
History information
Mangochi is located near the southern end of Lake Malawi and was formerly known as Fort Johnston. The cemetery was used from October 1917 to December 1918 and 26 War Dead were brought in after the Armistice. Special memorials are erected to five men of the 2nd Cape Corps, buried at Mwamba and Mwembe Boma, Mozambique (Portuguese East Africa), in April and May 1918.
There are now 60, 1914-1918 war casualties commemorated in this site.
