CWGC Archive Retains National Archives Accreditation
The CWGC Archive has successfully retained its Archive Service Accreditation following review by the National Archives' Accreditation Panel in July.
Archive Service Accreditation is the UK standard for archive services and recognises organisations that meets nationally recognised benchmarks for governance, collections management, preservation, and public access.
Retaining accredited status reflects CWGC’s continued commitment to preserving and sharing the records that document its work, history, and global mission.
In its review, the Accreditation Panel recognised the significant progress made by the CWGC’s archive service since accreditation was first awarded in 2022. The Panel commended the service’s considered approach to development, progress in digital preservation planning, and success in securing funding to support the long-term care of collections.
The review highlighted several achievements including:
- Improved collection storage and preservation arrangements
- Progress in digitisation and the transfer of material to appropriate storage environments
- Excellent progress in accessioning and cataloguing work
- Continued development of digital preservation strategy
- Increased engagement and visibility
The Panel also praised the Archive Service's role within the Commission, describing the archives as a core element of what makes CWGC's work possible.
Our Chief Archivist, Michael Greet, said: “This achievement reflects the support of all our colleagues across the Commission and our shared commitment to preserving the CWGC’s documentary heritage.
“The records in our care tell the story of the CWGC's work around the world and help ensure our history remains accessible for future generations. We are delighted that the progress made since our original accreditation has been recognised through the retention of accredited status, and we are very grateful to the Accreditation Panel for their thoughtful assessment and continued support.
“We greatly value the Accreditation Scheme and the opportunity it provides to benchmark our service against national standards and best practice, while continuing to build on this success in the years ahead.”
The CWGC Archive preserves the records of the Commission's work around the world and supports researchers, historians, family members and colleagues seeking to understand the history of commemoration. The archive collection can be explored online or consulted in person at the Reading Room by appointment.
