New artwork installed as Menin Gate restoration work continues

A temporary covering for the Menin Gate is now in place while our major restoration work on this iconic monument continues.

Installing the new covering and the final view from the front of the Memorial.

The covering features one of the original pencil sketches of the Menin Gate by Sir Reginald Blomfield. We believe this drawing dates from 1921 and was provided to us from an original sketch that is held in a private collection of an Ypres resident.

The drawing is similar but not identical to how the gate would look when completed. The most obvious difference is that the lion is “sleeping” or “resting” on top of the memorial in this version.
